WELCOME!

As a major academic center, Yale-New Haven Hospital radiology residents are able to see a wide variety of cases, learn from some of the leaders in the field of radiology, and train on state-of-the-art equipment. Our graduates enjoy accepting positions at several of the countries most competitive fellowships.  We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your time with us.

ROTATIONS

Each year is designed to give the resident increasing levels of responsibility and learning. First year residents will rotate on the following services: Musculoskeletal radiography, Body CT, Neuroradiology CT, Barium, Mammography, Chest radiography, Ultrasound, Emergency Radiology, and at the Veteran’s Hospital in West Haven, CT. Senior rotations will include time on Musculoskeletal MRI and CT, Body MRI, Cardiac MRI and CT, Neuroradiology MRI, and Interventional Radiology.

DUTY HOURS/CALL RESPONSIBILITIES

The typical work day is from 8:30 a.m. after morning conference to 5:00 p.m., with a one hour break from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. for afternoon conference.

Our Emergency Radiology Department is staffed by an attending radiologist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are several call pools, designed to give the residents exposure to emergency radiology, while still maximizing our time on clinical services. There is a night float system in place, which is covered mostly by second year residents. Night float consists of two week blocks, working from Sunday through Friday nights, from 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Second year residents will typically work 5-6 weeks of night float.

The short call shift, which covers the Emergency Department, is staffed by an attending radiologist, a senior-level resident, and a first year resident from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

CONFERENCES

There are daily one hour conferences at 7:30 a.m. and 1:00p.m. Conferences consist of approximately 70% case-based and 30% didactics, with an emphasis on didactics earlier in the academic year.  To see a sample of our conference topics, click here.

Residents also receive nonclinical conferences on topics such as radiology physics, health care policy, and economics.

There are weekly and monthly interesting case conferences on various subspecialities where residents are responsible for teaching fellow residents. These conferences are monitored by attendings to ensure that the material that is presented is accurate.
